Newly-sworn in Attorney General Loretta Lynch released a statement on the violence in Baltimore last night, condemning the rioters for “doing a disservice” to the family of Freddie Gray and the demonstrators who were protesting his death at the hands of Baltimore police.

“Those who commit violent actions, ostensibly in protest of the death of Freddie Gray, do a disservice to his family, to his loved ones, and to legitimate peaceful protestors who are working to improve their community for all its residents,” wrote Lynch. “I strongly urge every member of the Baltimore community to adhere to the principles of nonviolence.”

Lynch was confirmed just one day ago, succeeding Eric Holder, who was involved in the response to the tumult in Ferguson. She noted the Justice Department Civil Rights Division’s and FBI’s investigations into Gray’s death, as well as a review of the Baltimore Police Force.

“In the days ahead, I intend to work with leaders throughout Baltimore to ensure that we can protect the security and civil rights of all residents,” she wrote. “And I will bring the full resources of the Department of Justice to bear in protecting those under threat, investigating wrongdoing, and securing an end to violence.”
